So I would say that I'm a pretty healthy eater, I go in and out of phases like anyone else where I get extreme in staying healthy, but overall I eat pretty healthy. I would say it started a few years ago in college when I took my (I think pharmacy class???), whichever class it was my teacher was really big on discussing nutritional stuff and how we can eat a certain way to avoid having to take certain meds. This really opened my eyes to eating healthier and looking at more natural ways to go about our health then just popping pills. I think diet and exercise are huge in a person's well being, and although I am not always exercising like I should I definitely try to have a proper diet.

What does a healthy diet look like to me? Well basically I try to only eat natural things, I try to limit as much artificial/processed stuff as possible. I NEVER eat anything in a can, I am definitely a canned food SNOB. The only time I will eat anything out of a can is if I need some beans, but because I don't like canned food I limit how often I use beans in recipes. I actually have been thinking of getting one of those bean cookers (I don't know what you call them) but then I can start making beans fresh. Now just incase no one is aware, the reason I do not eat canned food is because they are SATURATED with salt. And yes you can get the reduced sodium cans, but they still have so much salt in them, and although some people feel like if they rinse the canned food under water they are removing a lot of the salt that is not true (unfortunately the canned food is saturated with salt and a lot of the salt is on the inside of the food, not just the outside). Alright so moving on, no canned food, so that means I buy all natural fruits and vegetables. I actually love cooking so I love buying fresh produce and chopping it all up. I try to always have fresh fruit in my fridge. AND the fruit has to immediately be cleaned, cut up, and stored. If I don't do this day one the fruit will go bad and I won't end up eating it. I try to food prep for each week and have healthy snacks available so that when I get hungry I have stuff on the spot ready to eat. This is the biggest thing with eating healthy, you have to make sure you have stuff available to eat. It's hard work eating healthy. For breakfast I have the same thing every morning, two pieces of wheat toast with grape jam. If it's an off day I may add some eggs and fruit to that. Mom just showed me how to make some green smoothies, and after watching Heather's video on green smoothies I think I will start adding this to my breakfast routine. A green smoothie (which just means a smoothie with some sort of greens in it, spinach, kale, etc. plus some fruit or whatever else you prefer) has excellent health benefits and will add so much energy to your day. I definitely felt a difference on the days I drank the green smoothies mom made me. Usually on my off days I more so just snack rather then have a big lunch. I may have some fruit and peanut butter crackers, or I may make a sandwich if I'm hungrier. At work I eat lunch and then an afternoon snack which usually consists of strawberries and peanut butter crackers. I try to make sure I have fruit once a day and vegetables once a day. Dinner time is usually when I get my veggies in. My favorite thing for dinner is chicken and veggies. I love so many different veggies, I go in and out of phases of which ones are my favorite. Right now my go to side items are sweet potatoes or butternut squash with green beans or zucchini with red potatoes. I use to eat broccoli multiple times a week but I had to limit it **** (oh wow I am previewing my post and it isn't putting my descriptive word up, weird! Where the stars are it's the word hard plus the word core) and make it a here and there type of side item because the gas it lets out was messing my belly up.

I've become a lot cleaner with my food choices also due to GI issues that have occurred over the last few years. I was getting a lot of upset stomach episodes and finally just had to cut out so much stuff and get on a bland diet and slowly bring different stuff back and see what all my stomach could handle. I've since that learned that I am lactose intolerant, which is outrageous to me because I grew up eating cereal on a daily basis and eating ice cream. I did research though and a lot of people become lactose intolerant as adults, apparently our bodies just stop making the enzymes we need to break down lactose and hence why you get GI symptoms. Luckily for me they make lactose free milk (and for any critics out there, yes it does taste the exact same as regular milk), they also make lactose free ice cream, I'm not big on sweets but every once in a while I may entice myself with a little lactose free ice cream. I've also since my stomach issues learned not to overeat. I try to eat my food slowly and the minute I feel full, I stop eating. I don't care who gives me a hard time about how much food got left over on my plate, I no longer over indulge, too many times I over ate and the feeling of an over full belly kept making me so sick. I definitely think taking a probiotic can be extremely helpful in maintaining a healthy gut. I haven't started taking one yet because I haven't found a brand I like, but it's something I would like to add to my daily regimen. Having an unhealthy gut can be detrimental to your overall quality of life, so it's important to feed it only the best, and cut stuff out that is pissing it off.

My weaknesses, of course I have them, who doesn't. I love coca cola. Hello I live in Atlanta, the home of coca cola. I've recently just cut these out, this is my second week. I'm doing good. I use to drink one a day, but very rarely would I actually finish the can. I think soda in moderation like anything else is fine, but I decided I didn't want it to be something I keep in my house and tempt myself with having on a daily basis, I'd rather just get one when I go out to eat so that's what I've decided to do. I also usually go in and out of cookie phases. My most recent favorite was double stuffed oreos. Mm they are delicious. But I would set a limit of three ( to six on some days  :o).  Luckily I moved on from that and haven't craved them in a few weeks and they are no longer sitting in my pantry. I try to satisfy any sweet cravings I have with fruit, strawberries are my favorite and they are so sweet. But like I said earlier, overall I don't have a big sweet tooth so I don't typically struggle with having too many sweets.

Okay guys so I'm going to be one hundred percent honest, I do not work out at all  :-\! I wish I could say I did, it's definitely something I've been wanting to start doing and that I've been thinking about for a while now. I guess my excuse has been that I don't have a cardio machine to use and my neighborhood isn't huge so if I wanted to get in a good cardio session I would have to take multiple walks. I could join a gym but I would honestly probably never go, it's an extra expense a month, and I hate thinking people are staring at me. These are all my excuses. I think the biggest thing that is starting to get me motivated to exercise is that I'm getting older and my body is starting to not be as tight and lifted as it use to be lol. I'm also getting pains and pulling stuff easier then I use to, and I don't have as much energy as I use to. I'm extremely critical of myself and sadly I can say that I don't even like getting into a bikini anymore because I don't feel like I look cute anymore. My nice abs and cute lifted butt isn't what it use to be. I also feel like my upper arms are getting flabby. Now to others who see me they may think I've lost my mind, but it doesn't matter what other people think, it matters how I see myself and what I think about myself. And only you can motivate yourself to exercise and get healthy.

I will be 29 this year, my last year in my twenties  :-[! This is really getting me motivated to want to get healthy, and by this I mean not only exercising but just making sure I'm eating healthier also. Your thirties are usually when people start to find health issues, and I want to try to prevent any issues from arising. So although I can not share any exercise regimens with you that I have I can let you know the plan that I have to start exercising lol. I work three days a week, so my goal is to start exercising four days a week. We just finished getting a little gym set up in our basement and now have a treadmill as our cardio machine. Now I am NOT a runner, when I run I feel like dying. Plus now working in PACU we do knee replacements on a daily basis and running is HORRIBLE on your knees, so that makes me even more hesitant to run. So instead of running I plan to use the treadmill to walk at the highest incline and walk at the fastest pace possible. I may decide to add some weights to this if I feel like I need more intensity. Now walking at a fast pace gives you just as much exercise as running, the only difference is you have to walk longer then you would if you were running. So don't get discouraged if you aren't a runner but feel like walking is a waste of time because it isn't. Alright so that's my plan for my cardio. Now for the rest of my workout, usually when I work out I will pick two muscle groups to work on each day (legs, butt, abs, arms). I usually do butt and legs one day and arms and abs the next. I don't have any amazing work outs that work wonders so if anyone does let me know. I typically just google new stuff to incorporate so I'm not doing the same things every time.

In addition to wanting to start exercising regularly in my little gym we now have I also need to bump up my walks with George. I try to take George on a walk around the neighborhood every day but that doesn't happen. But it's something the two of us need to work on because poor little Georgie got told he is a fatty at his vet appointment last week. He went into the 11 pound range and needs to get back into the 10 pound range.

Andrew and I also love hiking. We live so close to the mountains and there are hiking trails all around us. It's a fun activity the two of us enjoy doing together. We typically do this on the weekends during the summer and fall months. We also have an amazing walking trail literally two to five minutes up the street from our neighborhood that I was so excited to start using and sadly we have only used it a few times since we moved in. We talk about how we would love to get some bikes and start riding on the weekends but then we would have to buy bikes for the both of us and I'm too cheap.

One positive thing that I do do to stay in shape though, on work days I park at the top of the parking garage, it's four stories up, and I take the stairs every time.

When your dog gets told he’s a fatty! Ha! Poor George!

Walking on the treadmill at an incline is awesome. You can burn more calories and tone different parts of your body depending on the incline!

I can confirm that managing weight/shape gets harder as you get older. It’ll sneak up on you!

Hello Bookclub Peeps,

Well it's time for Chapter 14 - Nutrition!  I'm interested to hear how everyone keeps good nutrition in their lives.  How do you keep your meals healthy, do you meal plan, what helps keeps you motivated and what makes you "fall of the wagon."  Do you have a cheat day?

Hi guys,

This may be short because I just wrote my post and it booted my off again – WHAT!!! I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.  Anyway, fitness – as you all know fitness has been extremely important to me and something I have done most of my adult life.  I loved running, weight-lifting and eating healthy.  I loved making goals for myself because it helped me to keep going when I might otherwise let something get in the way of working out.  I know at times in my life I might have been a fitness fanatic and I know that’s not the best thing for your body.  Running a marathon was very difficult on my body but it was so worth it because it showed me I can do anything if I made my mind up!

One of the most rewarding jobs in my life was when I was a fitness instructor and personal trainer.  I love helping others make lifestyle changes and see their progress.  It’s so exciting watching their body change, their energy level excel and gain confidence that was once gone.

My fitness routine has changed throughout the years depending on what was going on in my life.  Sometimes it was easy and manageable and other times I had to schedule it like an appointment.  I have to say I would never think I would be where I am today – not working out!!  I can make all kind of excuses, but I think a couple of things started my downfall – my many foot surgeries and having one of the most hardest jobs in my life a couple of years ago!  I haven’t been able to get my mojo back but I’m hoping that once I get settled I will be able to get back into working out.  It’s important at my age to make sure that I am doing some type of cardio and strength training to reduce injuries and maintain my health!

I have to say that I enjoyed Heather’s video on her fitness routine.  She works out by walking her little ones in the stroller and the others ride a bike to the park.  Then she workouts out by chasing them around and working out on the playground equipment!  Her own little fitness gym!!

Hello guys,

I think my creative outlet lately has been sewing!  I have really enjoyed making quilts and it's so much fun to make something for someone else.  Quilting is actually very relaxing unless you screw up your design and have to take it out :(  I haven't had my sewing machine for awhile since the move and all, but I can't wait to settle in and get back to sewing.  Poor little Mason's quilt had to be put on hold!!  His is the first thing I will finish :)

I also love the crochet - I haven't done this in awhile but I use to crochet blankets alot!  It actually got me through "bed rest" when I was pregnant!  I think everyone got a blanket that year for Christmas!  I was a crocheting queen :)  I've thought about painting also which is something I really enjoy doing.  I haven't done this since high school though but I'm sure it all comes back to you.

I think it's important also to encourage your kids to be creative.  Being creative, whether it's writing, drawing, painting, or making jewelry can help with their confidence and also be an outlet for stress in their life.

I also liked Heather's video - what a great idea to keep up with all your family happenings throughout the year!

Oh goodness, it took me forever to realize that I wasn't logged in. I was on this page and able to read everything but I was looking everywhere for how to reply to the postings and finally I realized, there isn't a reply tab because I'm not logged in. G's!

Alright so chapter 11 I didn't enjoy at all, as yall all know I am not into social media at all. I will say that the internet I find extremely useful and would die without it. I love being able to access the internet to look stuff up that I'm interested in. I just recently got into youtube and I love being able to get on it and search stuff on different topics I'm interested in. However when I think of social media what comes to my mind is facebook, Instagram, snapchat, and whatever else is popular right now that I'm not aware of. Social media is something I personally choose not to participate in, I don't look negatively on other people that use it, it's just my personal chose, and I feel good knowing it's not something that consumes me that unfortunately for a lot of other people it does.

The biggest reason I choose not to participate in social media is because like I said earlier, I feel like it consumes peoples' lives. So many people I encounter are obsessed with it, they are constantly on their phone checking their social media sights. I also feel like it causes people to become obsessed with their persona. People want to take a million selfies or pictures in general to post on their sights to get their friends/followers attention. So many young girls who are brought up with social media are posting, let's be honest, slutty pictures of themselves. It's embarrassing! They do this to get guy's attention or to make other girls jealous. This is the type of behavior I don't want to participate in. I also don't like how people want to post every little part of their day to all their friends/followers. I find it sad that people feel the need to do this. I'm not going to sit down in the morning with a cup of coffee and book and take a selfie and post it updating everyone on what I'm doing and I don't know if this is still popular but putting my location out there so people know where I am (YIKES who came up with that, honestly why would anyone post their location, HELLO don't you know there are psychos out there who might stalk you and track you down). I'm also a very private person and don't want people stalking me. I feel like when you have social media so many people want to be "your friend" but they aren't really your friend, they just want to see what you're up to, and let's be honest you just accept to be their friend because you want to know what they're up to. This is also a big reason I don't want to participate because I would get addicted to looking people up and stalking them and I don't want to waste my day doing that so I make sure it's not something I'm susceptible to.

I feel so free knowing  that I'm completely ignorant of the drama that is going on on people's social media sights. No one knows what I'm up to and I don't have to worry about what they are thinking about me, and I don't have to worry about what people are posting! Our neighborhood has a facebook page and there is always so much gossip and drama. I am SO glad I am ignorant to it all. It is so sad to think that so many of these people, actually ALL of these people are older then me and they just sit around on their facebook pages posting so much crap. I'm thinking really? Do you not have anything better to do?

A flip side to social media that pretty much everyone will tell you for their reasoning behind why they have a social media sight is because they have it to keep in contact with certain people (family, friends, whatever). I have no trouble keeping in contact with the people I choose to keep in contact with. If you have a smartphone you can keep in touch with anyone, it's called get their phone number. You can text message, talk on the phone, send pictures, email, it's no harder to do this then use social media. I love communicating this way because I get to choose who has my phone number, as opposed to social media, anyone can look you up, and yes you can make your page private but they can still find you and ask to be your friend.

So as of right now, social media is not for me. I feel adequate keeping in touch with people via my cell phone. I think social media is more so negative then positive and I feel like it can be extremely addictive for most people. I know that if I had one it would become addicting for me, I also know that if I had one I would start worrying about stupid stuff like how I am portraying myself and what people are thinking about me. I would also get drug into people's drama.

Side note, hope I didn't offend anyone on my views of social media, I know yall all have one. I think as long as you don't get caught up in the negative aspects of it then it's fine to have. For me I just rather be safe then sorry so choose not to paticipate. I think if I had a business though I would definitely get one because it is a great way to reach out to people and find cliental.

Great post Jen!  Social media isn't for everyone and I agree that a lot of people spend way too much time on their phones.  It can be a good thing, but also a bad thing if you let it.  We do miss that you are not able to share in our insta and snapchat fun :)

I loved this chapter, and I loved Heather's YouTube video on this chapter. She does a family yearbook every year of her family with pictures throughout the year and activities they did and holidays and events. It is such an amazing idea, although at the same time sounds overwhelming lol. I would love to start taking more pictures and capturing more moments and maybe set aside some time each month to collect my photos for that month to put aside and maybe start doing something like that. It's a great way to sit back and reminisce on old times.

Alright so for my creative outlet, I have lots of things I do. First and foremost I love decorating my house, it's my biggest hobby and what I put a lot of my time towards, whether it is physically decorating or thinking about/researching ideas for new areas in my home. I will admit that sometimes my decorating hobby gets in the way of my responsibilities and it's important when this happens that I realize it and make sure to maintain my responsibilities first. For those who do not know, I am a very SLOW decorator. It drives mom crazy lol. I think it's important to not get carried away. Decorating is very expensive and unfortunately for me I don't have tons of money to throw away at it. I take my time to make sure I know exactly what I want to do and then when it comes time to doing it I like to find good deals. Sometimes it takes a few weeks to finish an area because I may have to wait for certain stuff to go on sale at hobby lobby. But decorating is one of my passions, it's been a huge part of my life since Andrew's been gone these last few months, it keeps my mind off being home alone and gives me something to look forward to doing on a day off. I also love to use my decorating skills to help others. I think it's important to share our talents with other people.

Other things I like to do but at the moment am not doing is sewing and knitting. I got a sewing machine a couple years ago and love making stuff, there is so much you can make and it's so easy to learn. Knitting I just picked up this summer and it's not hard per say but it is definitely TIME CONSUMING. These two hobbies are so exciting because the possibilities are endless. Sewing is a great tool to know how to do when decorating also. There are so many times when I have a vision in my head for something but can't find it or I do find it but it's outrageous in price. It's nice to know that if I can't buy it somewhere I can just make it. I have a table I got last year that I plan on making some seat cushions for, I can't find any seat cushions anywhere that I like or that fit the chair but I know I can find the fabric I have envisioned in my head and just make the cushions myself.

Wreaths! I LOVE making wreaths, and they are SO easy. I have wreaths ALL over my house and I made every single one of them. Wreaths are so expensive if you buy them already made. I need to go into the wreath business because when I look at prices I'm like ew barf I can make this way cheaper. This summer I just learned how to make a wreath out of fabric, it is SO EASY. I'm going to make a pumpkin wreath out of orange burlap for this fall!  :-*

Anyways, I feel like I rambled on this post, but I just have so many different things I like to do with my creative side. I think it's important to find outlets like that. It's nice to just take time doing something you love to do and just focus on it. Especially if it's something like making something for your house because then you get the reward of knowing you made it and get to display it.

Great post Jen!  I think you are an awesome designer - "Tavella Designs!!"  I'm actually really amazed at how creative and crafty you have become - I didn't see this in you when you were growing up :)  I can't wait for you to help me decorate my new house, it will be fun!

Alright so this chapter was all about working out. Let us know whether or not you are able to find time in your week to work out regularly. What is your exercise regimen if you have one. If you don't exercise regularly, what's holding you back? Any amazing work outs that you have found that really get you in shape that you want to share (great butt, ab, arm, leg exercises)?
